Pleasant Places
Mit der Arbeit »Pleasant Places« bespielen die EVI LICHTUNGEN zum ersten Mal den Marienfriedhof, eine in direkter Nähe zum Bahnhofsviertel gelegene Parkanlage, in der sich heute immer noch Überreste von Grabstellen aus vergangenen Jahrhunderten befinden. Zwischen Bäumen befindet sich eine Leinwand, auf der eine Reihe digitaler Gemälde zu sehen sind, die die Grenze zwischen Darstellung und Abstraktion ausloten. Der Titel der Arbeit ist angelehnt an die erste Serie von Landschaftsdrucken, die im siebzehnten Jahrhundert in Holland hergestellt wurden. Inspiriert von den Arbeiten Vincent Van Goghs ist Quayola 125 Jahre später in die gleiche Landschaft der Provence zurückgekehrt. Die Landschaften dienen als Ausgangspunkt und verformen sich schließlich zu neuen Strukturen und Visionen, die das fotografische Bild in Frage stellen und alternative Sicht- und Synthesewege vorschlagen.
Wir bedanken uns bei Alice Hinrichs, Kuratorin der EVI LICHTUNGEN 2022, für die Idee zur Ausstellung des Künstlers.With the work »Pleasant Places«, EVI LICHTUNGEN is showing for the first time a work at Marienfriedhof, a park located in the immediate vicinity of the railway station district, where remains of graves from past centuries can still be found today. Between trees stands a screen on which a series of digital paintings can be seen that explore the boundary between representation and abstraction. The title of the work is inspired by the first series of landscape prints produced in Holland in the seventeenth century. Quayola has returned to the same countryside of Provence 125 years later. The landscapes serve as a point of departure and ultimately morph into new structures and visions that question the photographic image and suggest alternative ways of seeing and synthesis.

Landschaftsmalerei, klassische Skulptur und Ikonografie sind einige der historischen Genres, die als Ausgangspunkt für Quayolas (*1982) hybride Kompositionen dienen. Seine vielfältigen Arbeiten, die alle auf der Grundlage von maßgeschneiderter Computersoftware entstehen, erforschen die Spannungen und das Gleichgewicht zwischen scheinbar gegensätzlichen Kräften: das Reale und das Künstliche, das Figürliche und das Abstrakte, das Alte und das Neue. Seine Arbeiten wurden in vielen renommierten Institutionen weltweit aufgeführt und ausgestellt, darunter das V&A Museum in London, das National Art Center in Tokio, die Ars Electronica in Linz und das Sundance Film Festival.
Landscape painting, classical sculpture and iconography are some of the historical aesthetics that serve as a point of departure for Quayola’s (b. 1982) hybrid compositions. His varied practice, all deriving from custom computer software, explores seemingly opposing forces: the real and artificial, figurative and abstract, old and new. His work has been performed and exhibited in many prestigious institutions worldwide including V&A Museum, London; National Art Center, Tokyo; Ars Electronica, Linz; Sonar Festival, Barcelona and Sundance Film Festival.
